The Venetian gondola: 1000 years of history on the water
The gondola is documented from 1094 and for centuries was the main means of transport in Venice. In the 18th century there were over 10,000; today around 400 remain, used almost exclusively for tourism.
The construction of a gondola
A modern gondola requires around 500 hours of work and costs 40,000-50,000 euro. It is asymmetrical to compensate for the weight of the gondolier who always rows on the same side. They are built from 8 different types of wood, and the famous "ferro" (the metal ornament at the prow) weighs 11 kg and has a shape that represents the 6 districts of Venice, the Grand Canal and the Doge's cap.
The gondola ride: how not to spend a fortune
The official price is 80 euro for 30 minutes (up to 6 people) during the day, 100 euro in the evening. Most gondoliers are willing to negotiate, especially out of season and away from the main routes.
Tip: Book a gondola in the Cannaregio district (less touristy) or in Dorsoduro for lower prices and more scenic routes along the inner canals. Avoid the Grand Canal and the St Mark's area - high prices, gondolas crammed together.
