Prague in December is a 3D postcard: snow on the Gothic rooftops, Christmas lights on the wooden stalls, the smell of mulled wine in the icy air. The Czech Christmas markets are among the most traditional and authentic in Europe.
Old Town Square
The main market takes place in Old Town Square around the Astronomical Clock (which chimes every hour with the dance of the 12 apostles). The stalls sell Bohemian crafts (crystal, marionettes, embroidery), traditional sweets and mulled wine (svarene vino).
To taste: Trdelnik (a dough pastry wrapped around a cylinder and roasted, filled with cream and Nutella), Smazeny Syr (fried cheese) and Svarak (spiced Czech mulled wine).
Wenceslas Square
The second market, on the large square where the Velvet Revolution of 1989 took place, is wider and less crowded than the first. The stalls of regional specialities (Moravian cheeses, craft beers, wild boar cured meats) are more interesting for food lovers.
