Dubrovnik has entered the hearts of millions of viewers as King's Landing in Game of Thrones. But the Pearl of the Adriatic was already worth the visit before the series: the 14th-century walls are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.
Dubrovnik: beyond King's Landing
Dubrovnik has suffered from its own success: after Game of Thrones (2011-2019), the number of tourists tripled, so much so that the city had to limit access for cruise ships. But the beauty of the Pearl of the Adriatic is so genuine that it survives even overtourism.
The City Walls
The walls of Dubrovnik (14th-16th century), nearly 2 km long, are the best preserved in the Mediterranean. The complete circuit (25 euro) offers spectacular views over the Adriatic Sea, the orange rooftops and the nearby islands.
Tip: Walk the walls anticlockwise (starting from the Pile Gate) to have the sun behind you in the afternoon. Avoid the central hours in summer: the walls are exposed and without shade.
The Game of Thrones Tour
The main sites: Minceta Tower (the Tower of Harrenhal), Sponza Palace (King's Landing), the Jesuit Staircase (Cersei's Walk of Shame), Fort Lovrijenac (the Red Keep). Guided tours from 25-35 euro.
The nearby islands
The island of Lokrum (10 min by ferry, 5 euro) is one of the main sets of the series but is above all a natural wonder: a pine forest, wild peacocks and a natural pool in the former Benedictine monastery.
