La Boqueria is the most famous market in Europe, but it is not the only one in Barcelona. A guide to the city's markets, from the touristy ones to those where Michelin-starred chefs shop.
The markets of Barcelona: beyond La Boqueria
La Boqueria is the most Instagrammed market in Barcelona, but also the one with the highest prices and the lowest quality for fresh produce (the stalls at the entrance sell mainly to tourists). Real Barcelonans shop elsewhere.
La Boqueria: how to visit it well
Despite the touristification, La Boqueria (1840, Las Ramblas 91) is worth a visit, but early in the morning (7-9) when chefs come to do their shopping. The stalls inside - not those at the entrance - offer authentic products at reasonable prices.
Not to miss: El Quim de La Boqueria (stall 584) prepares fried eggs with foie gras and squid for breakfast - one of the most extraordinary dishes in Barcelona.
Mercat de l'Abaceria (Gracia)
The covered market of the Gracia district (1892) is where the Barcelonans of this bohemian neighbourhood shop. Local fruit and vegetables, Montsec cheese, organic produce and an authentic atmosphere far from the tourists.
Mercat de Sant Antoni
The market of Sant Antoni (restored in 2015, operating since 1882) is one of the favourites among Barcelonans. On Sunday morning it hosts the famous second-hand book and comic market - frequented by collectors and enthusiasts from all over Catalonia.
